MASTERCLASS - PART 3
Prayer & Fasting | Matthew 6:5-18
Pastor Chris Snider
-
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME
YOUR KINGDOM COME YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD
FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS
LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE
1 Corinthians 10:13 // No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
1 Peter 5:8 // Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
The Lord’s Prayer brings us back into alignment with Him
Establishing a little bit of HIS KINGDOM IN HEAVEN BACK HERE ON EARTH
FASTING
Fasting is not done in order to get something or is done to “get God’s attention”
Fasting is putting our attention and focus on God, rather than ourselves
It opens a door into the divine even in the midst of an upside-down culture that we experience every single day

We know how much is going on in your lives and the lives of those around us. We want to provide an opportunity for you to pray with us and to be prayed for. Join us as we seek the Holy Spirit’s intercession in our lives, for our church and for our community.
What’s Oikos you might ask? Well each of us believe it or not have an Oikos. It is our relational network that we interact with each day. From our friends, to our family, our neighbors, coworkers, and everyone else in our life makes up our Oikos. At Spring Valley we believe that these relationships are not by accident. But rather these people are placed in our life by Jesus for us to share His love with them. Maybe they are unchurched, de-churched and / or not believers, we want to specifically write their names down on these cards to be praying for an opportunity to extend the love of God to them. This might be in meeting a practical need, or asking how we can be praying for them. Ultimately we desire to invite them to church and share Christ with them. Grab a card in the back seats on Sunday and start praying for your Oikos!
We’d love for you to like and follow us on social media! It’s a great way to stay up-to-date and connected with our SVC Family! When you visit us for in-church worship, we’d love for you to check-in! This is a great way to invite others to join you!
